Course descriptionThis course will be suitable for access by participants who have an interest in e-learning, using the WWW and language studies. The course will focus primarily on language as a tool for communication in society, in particular in the use of electronic media. Participants will engage with systematic analysis of language and the use of language in a local and global context.

On completion of the course, participants will have gained an understanding of communication, discourse communities, culture and identity, related to the growing use of communication technology and English as the language of international communication.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: An introduction to digital environments for learning (EDUA11110)

Additional Costs Students will be required to have regular access to a networked computer, and will be responsible for providing their own computing equipment and consumables. Broadband is recommended.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course participants will be able to:

discuss the nature of language, culture and communication in society using a variety of theoretical standpoints

relate issues of culture, identity and globalization to current and emerging technologies

evaluate the role of text and technology in the construction of meaning and the social world

critically evaluate current research and case studies which focus on the relationship between language, communication, culture and e-learning

analyse and evaluate the language of a selected discourse community, in terms of power, identity and culture
Assessment Information
Participants will select and define an online discourse community (using a website, weblog, discussion forum or similar). Using the tools introduced in the course, the community will be analysed to demonstrate issues of language, discourse, power, communication and culture. The assignment can be submitted in hard copy but an electronic version with appropriate hyperlinks should also be made available. The assignment should be equivalent to 4,000 words.
