Course descriptionThis course will give students the opportunity to explore a range of key e-learning themes as they relate to a training and development environment, and to become familiar with studying online. Students will take part in a range of stimulating, confidence-building activities, backed up with tutor support. The course will give students hands-on experience with digital environments, will offer practical guidance on the effective use of new technologies for training and development, and will explore some of the wider contextual issues around the practice, meanings and methods of e-learning.

During the course students will use discussion boards and chat rooms for learning and will take part in classes in a 3D virtual world. They will have the chance to explore and discuss a range of innovative approaches to learning using technology including e-portfolios, blogs and wikis. Students will use an e-portfolio to record their studies, focusing on a particular theme of interest and shaping it into their final assignment.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will be able to:
i. critically evaluate a range of technologies in terms of their impact on training and development
ii. begin to design their own e-learning resources
iii. contextualise their own practice in terms of the key issues emerging from current research in e-learning.
Assessment Information
Students will create, and regularly maintain throughout the course, an e-portfolio in which they will be required to provide evidence that they have been engaging fully with the technologies introduced during the course, and to a reasonable extent have been able to synthesise their knowledge of these into a vision of how they might apply in their own professional contexts.

At the end of the course students will be required to submit a presentation drawn from their e-portfolio focusing on a theme from the course of particular interest. This presentation should be equivalent in length to an essay of 2,000 words, although because of the different structure of e-portfolios it need not follow a traditional essay format. However, the usual academic requirements of referencing and critical thinking will apply.
