Course descriptionThis course considers the challenges in research leadership, from the management and mentoring of other researchers to involvement in large collaborative research projects and consortia. The course will include:
o balancing leadership and management;
o practical and legal issues in the recruitment, mentoring and management of research staff;
o frameworks for professional development;
o group dynamics and communication styles;
o project management, including financial, resource and staffing issue;
o collaborative research projects or consortia (e.g. EU funded projects);
o the assessment and management of risk.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, programme participants will have:
o drawn critically on the theories of leadership and management to enhance their understanding of the research leadership role in academia;
o developed a critical awareness of their own approach to research management, both as an individual and as a group leader;
o reviewed practical strategies and identified best practice for managing multiple projects, staff and resources.

Assessment Information
A written assignment (between 2000 and 2500 words) on one of the following topics:

o A personal reflection on leadership styles and approaches to leadership in higher education, a personal analysis of ones own leadership style and management practice, with future plans for development, and based on this personal analysis, a plan to implement a review of team working practices and culture within ones own research group.
o A case study of a research group to include an assessment of the current 'health' of the team, the drawing up of plans and recommendations for practical improvements in the management of the team, enhanced team working and collaborations, personal development of team members, the addressing of particular issues with a consideration of time scales and risk assessments.

The written assignment should draw appropriately on a review of relevant literature, and on a review of activities currently undertaken by fellow academics in the relevant discipline area.
