Course descriptionThis course is the first course studied by students on the PGDE Primary Programme. It aims to help students begin the process of constructing their professional identities as teachers. It does so by developing a pedagogical subject knowledge base focused on early years education and encouraging students to become members of a professional community of enquiry. This involves study of both Professional Studies strands and Curriculum area strands, as well as undertaking collaborative problem based learning tasks.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
¿ articulate a developing sense of professional identity
¿ demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of theories, principles and concepts of child development and childhood
¿ demonstrate critical awareness of current Scottish educational policy developments for the Early Years
¿ demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the health, education and childcare agencies that support children and families in the local community
¿ demonstrate knowledge and understanding of techniques and research methodologies used to inform and develop Early Years policy and practice

2. Practice Knowledge and Understanding
¿ collaboratively plan, execute and present a professional investigation focused on a significant Early Years issue

3. Generic Cognitive Skills
¿ critically identify, define, conceptualise and analyse complex professional level problems and issues
¿ develop original and creative responses to current professional issues
¿ make judgements where data information comes from a variety of sources

4. Communication, ICT, Numeracy Skills
¿ contribute to a group presentation using appropriate software
¿ use and critically interpret numerical and graphical data to professional insights
¿ relate effectively to their professional peers as members of a community of enquiry

5. Autonomy, Accountability and Working with Others
¿ practise in ways which show a critical awareness of own and others¿ roles and responsibilities
