Course descriptionA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Italian, designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Italian. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Italian.

All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination.

There is an identical course (Introductory Italian Language - ELCI07001) which runs in the first semester.

On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Intermediate Italian Language ELCI07004 (20 credits), which follows on from Introductory Italian Language.

Other requirements No previous knowledge of Italian is required.

Class Delivery Information IMPORTANT: Students must attend pairs of classes choosing ONE of:

GROUP A: Monday and Wednesday, 14:10-16:00
OR
GROUP B: Tuesday and Thursday, 16:10-18:00
OR
GROUP C: Wednesday and Friday, 11:10-13:00

Please note: this course will not appear on students' personalised timetable. Group Sign-up sheets will be available on LEARN during induction week. Groups have a limited quota, if a group reaches capacity, you will need to choose another.

The first class meeting will be the second class of the first week in the normal teaching room at the normal teaching time for each group.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
A course designed to give beginners a grasp of the language at an elementary level. Students will progressively develop basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and acquire a basic range of linguistic structures as well as vocabulary of approximately 600 words.
Assessment Information
Coursework 50% (two in class assessments and a homework assignment)
Degree exam 50% (A two-hour written paper)

All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination.
Special Arrangements
This course is open to all students as a credit bearing course, or over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. DELC students may only take this course if it over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course.
