Course descriptionThrough the study of representative films in their cultural contexts, the course will cover Ingmar Bergman&©s cinematic production from his breakthrough in the 1950s to his final film Saraband (2003). The course will examine developments in cinematic techniques and trace some of the recurring themes in the films, e.g. religion, belief and loss of faith, authority and the rebellion against it, generational and marital conflict, gender issues, eroticism, the role of art and the artist. The study of Bergman&©s writings on his life and work and viewing of interviews with him will be included in the course.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Danish Language 2 (ELCS08008) OR Norwegian Language 2 (ELCS08011) OR Swedish Language 2 (ELCS08013)
