| Course description | This course is for students on the HSS International Foundation Programme only. It is not available to undergraduate or postgraduate students.
Foundation English for Academic Purposes 2 is designed to improve the students' English knowledge and skills to the point where they can participate effectively in undergraduate courses in Humanities or Social Science. With that aim in mind, FEAP 2 will focus on the development of students' critical thinking and presentation skills. Critical Thinking sessions cover issues such as the identifying sound or poor argumentation in academic texts and recognising suasion and bias, and culminate in participation in - and analysis of - a group seminar. Presentation Skills sessions address such aspects of effective presentation as the use of visuals, phrasing and emphasis in vocal delivery, and making a strong conclusion. Together, these two strands complement the work done in Foundation English for Academic Purposes 1 on academic reading, writing and vocabulary, to provide the students with the tools required for effective undergraduate study.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- understand the role of critical thinking in the British university context
- demonstrate the linguistic skills needed to express positive and negative evaluations of text content
- participate with confidence in seminars/tutorials
- give an effective presentation in English
- analyse and critique others' presentations |
Assessment Information
This course will be assessed by two components.
1. Oral presentation (10 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions/answers and discussion), weighted at 50%.
2. Critical review (1,250-1,500 words) of two academic readings from those used in the non-EAP components for session two, counting as 50%.
To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in the combined mark (and a minimum of 30% in each assessment component).
