Course descriptionA post-imperial introduction to selected writing in forms of English with the aim of exploring issues of dominance, subjection, and resistance in terms of race, nationality, and gender in the self-identifying practices of a range of poets. The course will include Irish, Canadian, Australian, Palestinian, Caribbean and black British writing, and the emphasis throughout will be on the relationship between poetics and postcolonial understandings of history, identity formation, the environment and attachment to place, and consequently on the development of appropriate strategies of reading.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( English Literature 1 (ENLI08001) OR Scottish Literature 1 (ENLI08016)) AND ( English Literature 2 (ENLI08003) OR Scottish Literature 2 (ENLI08004))

Pre-requisitesA MINIMUM of 4 college/university level literature courses at grade B or above (should include no more than one introductory level literature course). Related courses such as cross disciplinary, "Freshman Seminars", civilisation or creative writing classes are not considered for admission to this course.
Applicants should also note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. In making admissions decisions preference will be given to students who achieve above the minimum requirement with the typical visiting student admitted to this course
having four or more literature classes at grade A.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will gain knowledge of selected post-imperial writing in forms of English. They will come to an understanding of issues of dominance, subjection and resistance in terms of race, nationality and gender in the self-identifying practices of a range of poets. By studying Irish, Canadian, Australian, Palestinian, Caribbean and black British poetry, students will acquire analytic and descriptive skills and will develop and apply appropriate strategies of reading.
Assessment Information
1 course essay of c. 2,500 words (25%);
1 take-home exam essay of c. 3,000 words (75%)
Special Arrangements
Numbers are limited, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot.
