Course description The introductory week considers Wordsworth, consciousness and literary form, and in particular how the 'shaping power of imagination' changes the nature of poetry itself. The course then takes on a pattern of reading that reflects the dialogue between Romantic explorations and modern critiques of 'consciousness', whereby primary material is supplemented by readings from modern critics and commentators. Genres covered include autobiography, lyrical poetry and the 'Romantic Ode', the gothic novel, the 'familiar' essay, and Romantic parody.
