Course descriptionThis foundational course for students enrolled on the MSc in 'Material Cultures and the History of the Book' will introduce students to a range of issues surrounding the conservation, management, and display of special collections, with particular emphasis on manuscript and printed materials.

Issues to be covered include cataloguing, conservation techniques, digitisation, collection management, and display and exhibitions. Seminars (which will run for 2 hours a week) will be taught by experts from the University and beyond.

The course is available to students from other MSc programmes with the approval of their programme directors and the course organiser

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completing the course, students will have acquired an understanding of:

* a variety of collections and their forms
* a range major issues in the management of collections
* the cataloguing, preservation, digitisation, promotion and display of special collections
Assessment Information
Students will submit one 4,000 word essay at the end of semester 2 on the date specified in the handbook.
