Course descriptionThis Online Distance Learning course aims to equip students with knowledge of the common quantitative methods (statistics) used in medical research, and develop a critical awareness of their use by themselves and others. Skills will be developed to enable students to use such techniques appropriately in their own research.

The course will consider the usual parametric and non parametric univariate statistical procedures and end by introducing multiple and logistic regression. All topics with be considered within the context of the published research literature and statistical validity.

Both knowledge and skills will be assessed, by critiquing an appropriate article and analysing a dataset.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
a. Judge the appropriateness of a range of statistical techniques to diverse research questions
b. Apply appropriately a range statistical techniques to datasets
c. Report results using agreed conventions
d. Interpret results and communicate conclusions with due regard to the level of expertise of the target audience
e. Appraise the assumptions underlying different statistical techniques and critically evaluate the regard given to them in the published literature
Assessment Information
Course assessments are aligned with the learning outcomes. Summative work will be approximately 3000 words in total and be approved by the Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Course Leader. Combined with formative assessments, it may incorporate one or more of the following:
