Course descriptionThe Classical Arabic Literature Course comprises three elements to provide a brief introduction to three of the key genres of classical Arabic literature: the risalah, the maqamah and pre-Islamic poetry. All materials will be read in Arabic and discussed in English.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To give students a brief taste of three of the principal genres of modern Arabic literature (the risalah, the maqamah and pre-Islamic) through intense reading of a few select examples

To develop students' ability to read classical Arabic literature in the original language from a critical perspective, both linguistically and literarily

To enable students to think about and critically discuss various themes, forms and techniques found in classical Arabic literature more generally
