Course descriptionThe course aims to provide students with the necessary critical understanding and skills relating to collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of qualitative data to understand and manage change in service delivery processes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to

Understanding
¿Demonstrate a critical understanding of the range of epistemological positions underpinning qualitative research (including how these differ from quantitative approaches) and how they inform decisions regarding design and methodology.
¿Demonstrate a critical understanding of the issues involved in generating and analysing qualitative data to inform short term quality improvement cycles.

Analytical skills
¿Identify research questions to address specific service issues
¿Design qualitative research and evaluation strategies to address questions
¿Collect data using a range of qualitative research methods
¿Collate, organise and analyse qualitative data
¿Reflect critically on the ways in which the findings are shaped by the methods and approaches used
¿Demonstrate understanding of the ethical and political issues arising when carrying out research for service improvement.

Practical skills
¿Code qualitative data using, paper based methods, NVIVO or other qualitative analysis software.
¿Presentation of qualitative information to inform a service process
