Course descriptionThe annotation is again the same, as it was a year ago:
"This course offers a typologically-oriented introduction to the indigenous languages spoken in Siberia, Russian Federation (Uralic, Turkic, Mongolic, Tungusic, Yeniseian, Chukotko-Kamchatkan, Eskimo-Aleut and isolates). Through a series of lectures, seminars, weekly practical tasks and reading, we will explore salient linguistic features of the various languages and language families spoken in the area. To facilitate this, I will also teach some basic skills of handling diverse typological data and, in particular, descriptive grammars of little known languages. I will also introduce the social context in which these languages function (both in a historical perspective and currently) and the language policy in the area as a part of more general Russian state policy towards indigenous languages.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Linguistics 2A (LASC08006) AND Linguistics 2B (LASC08013)) OR ( Linguistics 2A (LASC08006) AND Linguistics 2Lh: Structure and History of the Western European Languages (LASC08007)) OR English Language 2 (LASC08002)
