Course descriptionThis course involves a study of the relationship between social class, gender, occupation and other social factors in determining the pronunciation, syntax and vocabulary of speakers of English in Scotland today. Dialect contact and levelling will be discussed as will elements of language planning.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: English Language 2 (LASC08002)

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Sociolinguistics (LASC10002)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will have a sound understanding of the sociological features affecting the use of English in present day Scotland as well as those factors influencing ongoing change. Students should be able to progress to independent research in this subject.
Assessment Information
(1) Coursework providing 50% of the final mark.
(2) A two-hour written examination providing 50% of the final mark.
