| Course description | A sketch of the main trends in 20th century phonology, covering developments in the notion of the phoneme, the notion of the feature, and the place of morphophonemics and phonetics in phonology. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| After the course students should be able to think critically about the theoretical foundations of certain concepts with which they have been broadly familiar since the beginning of their studies; understand the generative critique of classical phoneme theory and the "abstractness controversy"; and understand the context of the development of Optimality Theory and Laboratory Phonology. |
