Course descriptionThis course builds on the basics of Discourse Analysis introduced in pre-honours courses. Students taking this course will develop/deepen familiarity with relevant analytic frameworks such as Genre Analysis and Conversation Analysis. They will have ample opportunities to develop practical skills in the analysis of discourse as a key feature of the course is hands-on work on spoken and written texts. And they will be exposed to possible applications of discourse analytic methodologies to real life problems (e.g. discourse in health care and educational setting).
The content of the course is organised in four blocks:
Block One: Introductory issues
Block Two: Written discourse
Block Three: Spoken discourse
Block Four: Applied discourse analysis
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Linguistics 2A (LASC08006) AND Linguistics 2B (LASC08013) OR Linguistics 2A (LASC08006) AND Linguistics 2Lh: Structure and History of the Western European Languages (LASC08007)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Linguistics/Language Sciences courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to
- understand and discuss critically the importance of investigating actual language use
- read and understand critically discourse analytic literature
- conduct small scale projects in discourse analysis using appropriate data and methodologies
