Course descriptionThis course is intended ONLY for students on one of the Honours Programmes in Linguistics or English Language and Modern European Languages (A0419 or A0418), and it is only available to students who choose to spend a full year abroad on those programmes. Students may only be admitted to this course with the permission of the course organiser. The course is not available to students on one of the 'Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language' Honours Programmes, who should take the course U04290 instead.

Students are required to take courses in Linguistics or English Language at a University in the appropriate country while they are abroad during their third year of study. These courses must be approved by the Head of Linguistics and English Language. If access to appropriate university courses is not possible, a long essay based on independent study (carried out while abroad) may substitute for these courses, at the discretion of the Head of Linguistics and English Language, but this is only possible in truly exceptional circumstances.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Determined by the particular academic activities selected by students, with the approval of the Head of the Linguistics and English Language Subject Area.
Assessment Information
Courses at the host institution totalling 30 ECTS credits (= 60 Edinburgh credits). The marks gained while abroad will be converted to marks on the Edinburgh scale. The Head of Linguistics and English Language will convene a small group every year, at the start of the year, to convert the marks received while abroad at a University in the appropriate country to the Edinburgh marking scheme; unless there are compelling reasons to the contrary, the conversion will normally be done using the conversion factors as used in DELC.

In exceptional circumstances, as outlined above, an essay of 10,000 words may substitute for the 30 ECTS credits (= 60 Edinburgh credits) in courses. This will be marked by members of staff in LEL using the standard Edinburgh marking scheme.
Special Arrangements
When access to university courses is not possible during the year abroad, a long essay based on independent study carried out while abroad may substitute for these courses, at the discretion of the Head of the Linguistics and English Language Subject Area. Under these circumstances, students will write an 10,000-word long essay on a topic which is relevant to their degree programme. The topic of the essay should be agreed with the Course Organiser before students begin their third year of studies and the essay should be written during the third year, while abroad. Students will be assigned a supervisor at Edinburgh and will be expected to remain in contact with their supervisor during the year, typically by email. The deadline for submission of the essay will normally be the Monday of Week 3 of the first semester of the students' fourth year of study.
