Course descriptionThe aim of this course is to survey current research on age-related effects on first and second language acquisition. It provides an overview of issues relevant to the critical period hypothesis, ultimate attainment and near-nativeness.

After successful completion of this course students should be able to understand current issues in the research on maturational constraints on language acquisition, including:

- the biological foundation of first language acquisition
- evidence for the critical period hypothesis
- ultimate attainment in second language acquisition
- conceptual and methodological issues in determining near-nativeness in a second language
