Course descriptionThis course aims to compare typical adult human grammar with the linguistic systems of a variety of other populations.

What features of typical linguistic competence differentiate it from the systems found in, for example:
- language contact
- language pathology
- communicative abilities of language-trained apes?

Comparisons such as these are one way of exploring the question of what makes human language special, and bringing evidence to bear on issues relating to the nature of Universal Grammar.
