Course descriptionThis course will examine communication from an evolutionary perspective. It will first ask what communication is, what communication systems have in common, and how different communication systems vary. It will then introduce the various issues that must be addressed by an evolutionary account of communication, and the various proposed solutions to these problems. Finally, it will apply these insights to a number of particular instances of communication in the natural world, including language.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After the course, students will have a broad understanding of what makes something communicative, the evolutionary problems that communication presents, the various ways by which these problems can be solved, and how these topices can inform our understanding of particular communication systems, including language. They will also be able to discuss these issues in an informed and academically responsible way.
