| Course description | The general academic aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the legal issues inherent in situations involving a foreign (ie non-Scottish) element and the basic concepts and principles of Scots international private law. More particularly, attention will be given to the rules which establish when the Scottish courts have jurisdiction in any case involving a foreign element. The course will also consider the applicable law in cases involving international elements heard before a Scottish court and the rules on recognition and enforcement of judgments in certain contexts. The International private law rules in relation to contract; delict; marriage; divorce and nullity; parent and child; property; insolvency; and succession will be covered in this course. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. A student should demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of the principal features of the subject, ie he or she should be able to demonstrate knowledge of a substantial range of major concepts, principles and rules of international private law.
2. A student should be able to demonstrate a basic ability to apply his or her knowledge to a situation of limited complexity in order to provide arguable conclusions for hypothetical problems involving international private law.
3. A student should demonstrate a basic ability to identify and retrieve up-to date legal information, using paper and electronic sources and to use primary and secondary legal sources relevant to international private law.
4. A student should demonstrate a basic ability to recognise and rank issues in terms of relevance and importance; to bring together information and materials from a variety of different sources and to make a critical judgement of the merits of particular arguments.
5. A student should demonstrate a basic ability in writing to use English language proficiently in relation to international private law matters; to present an argument in a way which is comprehensible to others; and to discuss legal materials which are written in technical and complex language.
