| Course description | The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the law of commerce as it is in force in Scotland. The objectives are to provide members of the class with a basic knowledge of the subject, set in its business and economic context, and to develop, through a tutorial programme, powers of reasoning about, and skills in analysing, factual situations in terms of commercial law, with a view to advising on and writing about problems involving that branch of law. Students should be able to develop their oral and written skills in legal analysis and debate. The course is one that is normally taken in the second year of the LLB, and it builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the first year in such courses as Contract, and in second year courses such as Property law. The topics covered are necessary for admission to the legal profession in Scotland, so that the course is intended to play a part not only in the academic development of students but also in their professional formation. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Sources of Law:
¿ knowledge and understanding of important aspects of Scottish Commercial Law (including sale and supply of goods, insurance, methods of payment, the law of intellectual property, competition law, the law of rights in security and cautionary obligations, the law of diligence, and issues in the law of corporate and personal; insolvency)
¿ consolidate knowledge and understanding of the hierarchies of legal sources in Scotland
¿ consolidate and encourage students to keep up to date with legal developments, and how to keep themselves up to date.
¿ knowledge of appropriate secondary and primary sources of law in the commercial law context
¿ gaining commercial awareness with an emphasis on future practical application |
Assessment Information
50% written ¿take home¿ question with a limited time of no more than a week from the question being handed out to the question being submitted
50% examination which can be assessed in a variety of ways, including the potential use of multiple choice questions. |
