Course descriptionThe aims and objectives of the course are to impart to students an understanding of the ways in which the interests driving competition law and the regulation of innovation interact $ú and often conflict. The purpose of this course is to understand these tensions and to evaluate a legal framework capable of enabling both regulatory spheres to co-exist. The course will use a number of case-studies in order to understand contemporary issues in competition law within innovative markets. Several seminars will also be co-taught by a Professor with expertise in applied economics and a range of outside expert speakers (e.g. high-level legal practitioners; government officials; industry advisers) will participate in the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to consolidate and deepen skills acquired through the study of competition law at undergraduate level, including: expression, argumentation, problem-solving and debate, via seminar participation; independently producing written research of postgraduate standard which displays critical understanding, sound analysis and independence of mind, clear and succinct expression of ideas, the ability to pursue an argument with proper care, and attention to academic literature; in preparing for seminars and essays, to synthesise material from a broad variety of research sources; development of research skills: using the library, relevant databases and appropriate use of Internet resources.
