Course descriptionThe course is designed to introduce students to European Social Policy, European Labour Law and the overall importance of European Social Policy to the European Programme. This will include an overview of a range of topics which comprise the subject of European labour law, including European equal treatment law, European equal pay law, family-friendly policies, the protection of part-time and fixed-term employees, the regulation of working time and the safeguards for employees on the restructuring of an undertaking.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should have:
(a) a general understanding of the areas of European Labour law and European social policy discussed in the course;
(b) a detailed and specific knowledge of some particular areas of European Labour law within this broader framework;
(c) an understanding of major labour law issues and debates;
(d) developed skills of reading and critical analysis enabling them to evaluate the work of European Labour law scholars;
(f) developed written and oral skills, including the clear and succinct expression of ideas; and
(f) a basic grounding in research skills and techniques in European Labour law and social policy.
