Course descriptionWhat do Velázquez, Goya, Fortuny, Gaudí, Picasso and other Spanish artists have in common? This course offers a stimulating survey of the arts in Spain, from El Greco in Toledo to the avant-garde artists in 20th-century Barcelona. In discussions of works of art and architecture, we will interrogate the idea of ¿Spanishness¿ in Iberian art.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
¿ understand the development of the arts in Spain in the greater context of Western art history
¿ understand the concept of ¿Spanishness¿ in relation to the arts in Spain
¿ have in-depth knowledge of the most prominent works by key artists/architects, such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Gaudi and Picasso
¿ be able to consider Spanish art within the wider historical context
¿ be able to analyse and interpret a work of art, using the appropriate art historical vocabulary
¿ be able to engage critically with the scholarship on the subject
Assessment Information
Most Open Studies 10 credit courses have two pieces of assessment. A short unseen assessment, worth 25% of the total mark, delivered in week 11, and a longer assessment worth 75% of the total mark, submitted after the course is finished. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each assessment and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum.
