Course descriptionStudying and working in Operational Research and Finance requires a wide range of computing skills. This course gives an introduction to several packages, including LaTeX, Matlab and Excel, via applications relevant to OR and Finance, then develops basic skills in java programming.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Ability to typeset a report containing mathematical notation using LaTeX and prepare a presentation using Beamer. Ability to perform relevant mathematical computations and data handling using packages such as Matlab and Excel. Ability to write Java programs for simple applications in OR and Finance.

Syllabus Latex: concept of command-driven rather than wysiwyg text processing; commands for typesetting Mathematics; Beamer as a Latex-based system for slide preparation. Packages for mathematical computation and data handling using packages such as Matlab and Excel; applications in OR and Finance. Java: introduction to common programming concepts (variables, loops, conditional execution, arrays, subroutines) applied to simple applications in OR and Finance.
