Course descriptionThis course explores the variety and styles of music to be heard in Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, and considers the extent to which this repertoire reflects Louis's power, magnificence, enthusiasms and prejudices.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Music 2B: Set Works (MUSI08033) OR Music 1D: Introduction to Compositional Techniques (MUSI08056)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to investigate three principal areas of musical activity - theatre, church and chamber music - and to relate them to the social and political climate of the times. As well as reading appropriate books and articles , students will be expected to familiarise themselves thoroughly with this repertoire: to study the scores, and to listen to as much of the music as possible. Students will also be encouraged to make links between musical and architectural styles at Versailles.
Assessment Information
Presentation (20%) one essay c.3,000 words (40%) due on the 7th Nov 2012, one essay c.3,000 words (40%) due on the 5th Dec 2012.
