Course descriptionThis course will introduce students to the variety of research methods used in the study of music. These may include: transcription and editing from a number of different historical periods and from recordings; archival research; the use of fieldwork and interviewing techniques; empirical research methods and experimental design; researching music for performance and the writing of programme notes; guidance on the design and preparation of a dissertation, a creative portfolio or a performance.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Music 2A: Music and Ideas (MUSI08031) OR Music 2B: Set Works (MUSI08033) OR Music 1D: Introduction to Compositional Techniques (MUSI08056)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will have been given experience of:
- conducting independent research
- reflecting critically upon this research and on research methods more generally
- interrogating what "research" means in terms of the roles to be engaged in at level four
Assessment Information
-Interview task - required but feedback given to class overall rather than assessed individually
-Live-music task (group task, group presentation and individual report):
~ Group presentation - 10%
~ Individual report 1000-1500 words - 20%.
-Musical object/event task: 2000 words - 40%.
-Interview report with critical commentary, 2000 words - 30%.
