Course descriptionThis module covers the basic underpinning real-world measurement of the properties of biological tissues. This includes methods used to obtain data on the relevant physical properties of biological materials, including the following:

¿ Mechanical properties using stress-strain measurement.
¿ Fluid properties with viscometry.
¿ Electrical properties (conductivity) and imaging electrical impedance tomography, and microscopy of neuron activity.
¿ Thermodynamic properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity) and thermal imaging.
¿ Optical properties (refractive index, scattering, crystallinity) and microscopy of ordered protein structures (collagen, elastin).
¿ Material/chemical properties with Raman spectroscopy
Methods of measurement of forces on micro-tissues will be covered using Atomic Force Microscopy (also used to image stiffness, adhesion, and friction on the nanoscale).

In vivo imaging techniques will be discussed: ultrasound (bulk modulus, Doppler: blood flow), x-rays (bone density, absorption in tumors), and laser Doppler imaging.

The module will also cover the use of tools used in orthopaedic and cardiovascular surgery.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The student will be exposed to a wide range of techniques employed for measuring mechanical, material, thermal, optical, electrical and fluid properties in medical diagnosis and biological research.

Lectures will address which methods are used to acquire data and images on this range of properties, and will concentrate on both theory, and practicalities of each technique.

Insights from the Engineering, Medical and Biological perspectives will be acquired from a series of practical demonstrations of measurements of the vast majority of these properties.
