Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be introduced to interdisciplinary approaches to culture and historiography. They will be introduced to theory and methodology and will acquire some generic and some specific training in skills. They will learn how to use, acquire, organise and synthesise a number of sources for research and study for the history, culture and ethnology of Scotland including on-line material, libraries and archives. They will be introduced to a variety of primary source material included manuscript or other written materials, visual material (photographs), material culture, oral sources (oral testimony or songs) and literary material (songs, poetry and traditional narrative tales). Students will learn to identify research material suitable for their selected internship and area of special interest. They will learn to identify and how to address problems encountered in research: methodology, archival resources and restrictions, source limitations, transcription and analysis. They will expected to be able to manage their research, maintain their bibliography and present their research.
Assessment Information
The students will be required to pass a written source analysis and review, normally 4000 words in length, in which they discuss the range of source(s) available for a chosen research project. This will include discussion of some or all of the following: primary written or printed sources, oral, visual, material objects and on-line material as well as any relevant secondary material. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the nature of the sources, their purpose, their reliability or bias (if applicable) and their application and use in current research.
