-close, historically informed reading of philosophical texts
-Understanding of the history of ideas, and the relation of philosophical ideas to narrower intellectual traditions and to the thinker's wider historical context.
-links and discontinuities between contemporary ideologies and philosophical systems
-awarenwess of the difficulty of dealing with fragmentary texts
-philosophical doctrine as a guide to practical conduct and philosophical allegiance within the Greco-Roman world,
-links between philosophy and religion
