Course descriptionThe introduction of this new course is necessitated by the need to maintain a sufficient degree of choice for students. The course focuses on dress in the Roman world and aims to familiarise students with this realm of material culture and current research in this field. In recent years, scholars have begun to realise that dress choice could reflect identity (status, gender, ethnicity) and that, as such, the study of dress behaviour holds enormous potential for Roman cultural and social history. The course will be interdisciplinary in character, drawing on theoretical models from the social sciences as well as written, pictorial and other archaeological sources.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to promote knowledge of the wide range of dress forms in the Roman world and its use for questions of cultural and social history and to develop students? abilities to use diverse disciplinary and theoretical approaches. They will be encouraged to combine pictorial, archaeological and historical approaches, shaped by their individual interests.

On successful completion of the course, students will be able, in the context of two scholarly essays and class discussions, to:
? demonstrate a knowledge of dress theory, diverse source material for dress history and various dress types
? use this knowledge to formulate theories regarding identity processes among the population of Rome and its provinces
