Course descriptionThe MSc/Dip in Eighteenth-Century Culture aims to deliver the academic, professional, and archival training required to undertake graduate-level research in eighteenth-century cultural history. This, its first-semester core course, responds to recent developments in eighteenth-century historical scholarship by focussing on individual and social creative expression (rather than, say, purely intellectual achievements) of the ¿age of improvement,¿ which has come to define the century that contained and extended beyond the Scottish Enlightenment. Pedagogically, the course combines ¿in-house¿ seminar-style teaching in the historiography of eighteenth-century British culture with practical ¿on-site¿ training modules and an internship in professional and archival skills at major neighbouring repositories of Scottish art and historical documents. Its view of the century extends through the long eighteenth century (i.e., from c.1688 to 1832). While it will examine cultural developments in England, Scotland, and the empire, it will do so from a cosmopolitan Scottish perspective, befitting its location.

In addition, it has been designed to stand alone as an option course for MSc students across HSS who seek training in the historiography and archival methods of eighteenth-century cultural history.
