| Course description | The MSc/Dip in Eighteenth-Century Culture aims to deliver the academic, professional, and archival training required to undertake graduate-level research in eighteenth-century cultural history. This, its first-semester core course, responds to recent developments in eighteenth-century historical scholarship by focussing on individual and social creative expression (rather than, say, purely intellectual achievements) of the ¿age of improvement,¿ which has come to define the century that contained and extended beyond the Scottish Enlightenment. Pedagogically, the course combines ¿in-house¿ seminar-style teaching in the historiography of eighteenth-century British culture with practical ¿on-site¿ training modules and an internship in professional and archival skills at major neighbouring repositories of Scottish art and historical documents. Its view of the century extends through the long eighteenth century (i.e., from c.1688 to 1832). While it will examine cultural developments in England, Scotland, and the empire, it will do so from a cosmopolitan Scottish perspective, befitting its location.
In addition, it has been designed to stand alone as an option course for MSc students across HSS who seek training in the historiography and archival methods of eighteenth-century cultural history. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Scholarly knowledge, appropriate to Level-11 assessments that document:
- Sophisticated ability to locate sources of eighteenth-century Scottish cultural history in major repositories;
- Analytical and research skills necessary for meaningful and critical engagement with associated secondary sources (in print and online).
- Complex understanding of the historiography that informs the study of the cultural history of the eighteenth century in Britain;
- Advanced appreciation of the research methodologies that scholars use to evaluate and analyse historical evidence, through participation in a core courses that comprises an on-site internship and seminar-based training, along with option courses drawn from associated disciplines;
- Demonstrative expansion of individual analytical and interpretive skills, through critical assessment of written work appropriate to academic and curatorial contexts;
- Meaningful understanding of two significant fields of research in associated cultural history, developed and assessed through a 2500-word research essay.
2. Academic skills, demonstrated through assessments that require:
- Critical thinking, observation and reading, suited to oral and written work;
- Preparation of balanced, accessible, and valid discussions of complex issues and evidence pertaining to eighteenth-century cultural history in Anglo-Scottish context;
- Sharing of constructive criticism, through participation in seminars and internship arrangements, and through critical assessment of other students¿ ideas as presented through the PebblePad platform;
- Composition of concise arguments to firm deadlines;
3. Professional skills, developed through the internship placement and demonstrated through participation in seminars, workshops, and supervisory meetings:
- Engagement with and evaluation of a range of methods applicable to the study of cultural history;
- Critical evaluation of and hands-on work with primary sources of historical evidence;
- Critical assessment of secondary scholarship;
- Recognition and application of combinations of critical perspectives on primary and secondary historical materials to investigate problems within the cultural history of the Scottish Enlightenment in the broader context of the eighteenth century;
- Comprehension of the nature of historical perspectives through analyisis of associated developments in historical scholarship and methodologies;
- Identification of historical continuities and contrasts that define the field of eighteenth-century Scottish cultural history.
4. Transferable skills essential to the meaningful exchange of knowledge essential to the practice of cultural history in both academic and public repositories of archival materials:
- A command of archival, material, bibliographical, and IT-based research skills, including the best practice of PebblePad blogging software;
- Abilities to communicate scholarly reading and textual analysis to less-specialised consumers of historical information;
- Abilities to work effectively in a professional working environment, and to collaborate in a seminar-style setting;
- Understanding and coping with a range of viewpoints on problems of interpretation and evaluation;
- Abilities to select and apply a variety of critical approaches to problems informed by uneven evidence;
- Understanding how to extract key elements from complex information and to solve associated problems;
- Understanding ethical dimensions of the study of the past, including its centrality in the shaping of class, ethnic, gender, national and other identities with current, sometimes sensitive relevance;
- Academic rigour and mental agility;
- Openness to change and adaptability of mind;
- Ability to marshal argument lucidly, coherently and concisely both orally and in writing;
- Ability to write and think under pressure and to meet firm deadlines; |
