Course descriptionA comprehensive survey of theories of truth, including the correspondence and coherence theories, and pragmatism. The semantic conception of truth (Tarski), and more recent debates about deflationism. Other topics discussed may include relativism, debates about truth and meaning, and the semantic paradoxes.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Logic 1 (PHIL08004)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Philosophy courses at grade B or above, and should have passed an introductory Logic course. Visiting students are recommeded to discuss enrolment for this course with the Course organiser.

To develop further the philosophical skills, and to extend as well as deepen the philosophical knowledge, acquired in previous philosophy courses.
Assessment Information
mid-term essay of 1500 words (worth 40%) and end-of-term essay of 2000 words (worth 60%).
