Course descriptionThe course provides an introduction to political Islam as a social and political phenomenon in the contemporary Middle East. It examines conflicting definitions of political Islam; debates on its compatibility with democracy; its intellectual, social and historical roots; its relationship to violence and its implications for international relations and world order. These questions are explored via lectures and tutorials discussing a number of case studies as well as broader thematic issues.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 4 Politics/International Relations courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.
