Course descriptionThis course offers students a supervised opportunity to develop and design their own independent research proposal. Managing such a process is essential training for students wishing to proceed to advanced postgraduate research (PhD), or to acquire research management skills applicable to non-academic settings (eg public and commercial applications). The course culminates in the submission of a written research proposal.

The course aims to provide a supported research environment in which students can:
- establish their research question/s
- justify the relevance of their proposed research in relation to existing research and theoretical debates
- decide upon theoretically and empirically appropriate methodologies and techniques
- scope and detail the resource implications of the proposed research
- plan timing in terms of preparatory work, field or archive work, and writing up.
- experience different modes of presenting research.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will:
- Understand how to frame research questions in a manner appropriate to their chosen area of research;
- Know how to adopt research techniques appropriate to the research question and research subject/s;
- Be aware of the practical resource and logistics considerations of research;
- Know how to plan time and resources in relation to a medium-sized research project;
- Know how to use visual presentation tools in a conference setting (power-point etc.) ;
- Understand and prepare a research design, drawing, where appropriate, upon a range of theories and concepts in human geography or other relevant subjects
- Experience the demands of presenting a paper and accepting feed-back in an academic-style conference

20 minute conference presentation at Postgraduate Conference
2,000 words written research proposal
