Course descriptionWe will consider speaking, listening, and reading in relation to brains and cognition.

In this course we will review the latest theorising concerning speaking, listening, and reading, the goal being to understand the detailed content of these activities, and how that content is supported by the anatomical and computational nature of human brains.

This is a stand-alone course but has also been designed to complement Language Behaviours, Brains and Cognition: Principles and Approaches. The goal is to reflect an Edinburgh view of language research.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To understand how to construct a research programme around some aspect of current research in speaking, listening, and reading, so that the student understands the state of the art and can make proposals for further work, potentially at MSc project level or at PhD level.

Lecture 4 The corpus callosum and language
Lecture 5 The cerebral hemispheres and language
Lecture 6 Visual information processing and language
Lecture 7 Memory, attention and language
Lecture 8 The dyslexias and dyspahsias
Lecture 9 Synaesthesia and language
Lecture 10 Autism and language
Transferable skills Students will acquire the capacity to find material in the research literature and to evaluate it with respect to the current goals of the field; they will gain practice in synthesising information and re-presenting it.
Reading list There is no set textbook. The suggested readings will be a mix of influential older research papers and current research papers, and will be electronically available at the start of the course.
