Course descriptionThe course will explore how scripture, theology and social realities reflect the complex and competing claims around issues of gender and ethics in Islamic thought and society. Through a variety of primary and secondary sources (in English), the course will look at select ethical themes including medical ethics and criminal law as well as the feminist and human rights debates which continue to challenge and shape Muslim societies and their understanding of spiritual and legal equality.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Engage critically with primary and secondary sources in order to better appreciate the continuing influence of the Qur¿an and other classical literature shaping Muslim socio-ethical and human rights debates.
2. Demonstrate understanding of key issues around gender and Islam and the capacity to 'read' the relationship between law and ethics.
3. Demonstrate the ability to coherently formulate in essay form one 3000-4000 word paper from either an aspect of gender and Islam or a contemporary ethical issue, in both cases engaging critically with primary and secondary material.
4. Demonstrate engagement with the prescribed reading, having discussed texts in lectures and seminars with other members of the class, attended and responded to lectures.
