Course descriptionThis course explores the theme of the three-dimensional or physical manifestations of Scotland's traditional culture systems through a series of thematic case studies. Emphasis is placed upon the examination of material culture exchange and development in relation to such issues as status, ethnicity and identity. Within this framework, form and function, aesthetics and semiotics are explored from an ethnological stance.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Scotland and Orality (SCET08008) AND Visualising Scotland (SCET08009)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students must have a background in Folklore or Anthropology (ideally at least 3 relevant courses at grade B or above). We will only consider University/College level courses for entry purposes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should have:
A solid familiarity with material culture theory, including museology and collection theory.
An enhanced understanding of the concept of objects as evidence.
Experience of producing critical texts on the concept of material culture through course work tasks.
A broad understanding of the empirical context of material culture within a Scottish cultural framework.
Assessment Information
One essay (3,000 words) - 25%
One 'audio' essay (20 minutes) - 25%
Degree exam - 50%
