Course descriptionThe course will be built up from selected examples of key bodies of social work research. For each of the selected areas the major research questions, methods of approach and principal findings will be presented. Invited speakers will be asked to relate the impact of the selected studies on the relevant areas of service practice and on their own intellectual and professional development. The interaction of research planning and public policy development in social work will be exemplified through case studies, demonstrating the erratic progress of knowledge building in an uncertain policy environment with limited provision for social work research.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the substantive findings of major classic and contemporary research studies and research programmes in social work.

2. Demonstrate understanding of methodological issues in social work research, including the role of exploratory and evaluative studies.

3. Describe the processes of research dissemination, uptake and application in service practice.

4. Describe the relationship between research and policymaking for the personal social services.
5. Understand the place of social work values in the development of social work practice and research.
