Course descriptionA practice placement of 65 days will provide students with opportunity for direct supervised practice in an agency providing social work services supported by a Practice Teacher appointed by the agency to teach and assess the student. Practice will be in a broad range of settings ensuring that skill development and the integration of knowledge in informing practice is the focus for learning.

The opportunity for service users to give feedback on their experience of receiving help from the student will be incorporated in the practice learning model. Students will be encouraged to learn from a range of professionals in other fields and to begin to understand the importance of working together. The student will be supported by the involvement of a university tutor.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Social Work in Communities (PG) (SCWR10025) AND Working with Complexity in Social Work 1 (UG) (SCWR10020) AND Social Science for Social Work (PGSP10001) AND Doing Social Work Research (SCWR11027)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
All six SiSWE learning requirements will be addressed in this course. On completion of the course students should have had opportunity to learn about, and gain experience in, the following:
1 Prepare for, and work with, individuals, families, carers, groups and communities to assess their needs and circumstances;
2 Plan, carry out, review and evaluate social work practice with individuals, families, carers, groups, communities and other professionals and;
3 Assess and manage risk to individuals, families, carers, groups, communities, self and colleagues;
4 Demonstrate professional competence in social work practice;
5 Manage and be accountable, with supervision and support, for their own social work practice within their organisation;
6 Support individuals to represent and manage their needs views and circumstances.
Assessment Information
Assessment of supervised practice will take place in a service delivery context. This will consist of a report from the Practice Teacher, with responsibility for the placement, giving a clear pass or fail recommendation. The student will also be required to submit a portfolio which contains a collection of evidence of their practice. As part of this, the student must, for formal assessment purposes, provide a written (2000 word) account of the development of their learning. The assessed placement material will be considered by a Review Panel which will make recommendations to the Board of Examiners.
