Course descriptionThis course requires the student to devise, conduct, and present a project examining an applied sports science issue. The student will be expected to work mainly independently in order to gain practical experience of research design, data collection and data analysis. A joint decision is made between the student and an allocated member of staff, who will act as a supervisor, concerning whether the project is to be submitted in a traditional dissertation format or a journal article format. Students will be encouraged to work in areas of staff research expertise and interest.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- Identify and delineate a suitable research problem within an area of conceptual enquiry;
- undertake work that reflects a critical and intellectual awareness of the problems associated with project design;
- demonstrate a greater understanding of the relationships between theoretical concepts and research methodology;
- design and conduct a research experiment involving the collection and analysis of orignial data;
- synthesise and present large amounts of information in a written format which contributes to knowledge and which might serve as a basis for further research or study.
Assessment Information
1) The traditional Dissertation format requires the submission of the following documents: 500 word Initial Proposal (10%); 500 word Final Proposal; 10,000-12,000 word Dissertation (90%). 2) The journal article format requires the submission of the following documents: 500 word Initial Proposal (10%); 500 word Final Proposal; 30 page A4 Journal of Sport Science-style article (60%); 30 page A4 revised article + rebuttal letter (30%).
