Course descriptionSelf is the principal gift a pastoral or spiritual carer has to offer another. This course, utilising theological, psychological and literary resources, aims to help students explore dimensions of their personhood which may influence their ability to offer sensitive pastoral or spiritual care.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Practical Theology and Ethics (THET08013) OR God in Philosophy: Plato to Hume (THET08010) OR Systematic Theology 2Bh: Dogmatic Theology (THET08001) OR ( Mind, Matter and Language (PHIL08014) AND Knowledge and Reality (PHIL08017))

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course students should:
a) have an understanding of the significance of self-awareness for providing sensitive spiritual and pastoral care;
b) be able to utilise theological, psychological and literary resources to explore aspects of their personhood;
c) be able to read critically and comment on significant texts from social science, healthcare and pastoral theology which influence contemporary understandings of self as a therapeutic resource;
d) have the skill of writing critically on their experience of the course demonstrating their understanding of the relationship between theology and practice in pastoral and spiritual care;
e) have further developed transferable skills in oral presentation, debate and facilitation of small groups.
Assessment Information
seminar presentation (5%) and contribution to weekly seminars (5%);
30% on a 2500 word essay;
60% on the degree examination.
Special Arrangements
This is a seminar based interactive course, involving student presentations and small group and plenary discussions and has a quota of 20 students. Places will be allocated by date order of registration. Any student not gaining a place should contact the Divinity School Office as a waiting list will be in operation.
