Course descriptionThe course aims to develop the student's skills in using scientific material to develop a testable hypothesis and construct a research plan to test the hypothesis. Students will be expected to make a convincing argument by summarising existing data, showing how the hypothesis is based on these results and demonstrating that the hypothesis can be tested using a feasible research plan. The research proposal may relate to the proposed laboratory work for the dissertation but will be independent of it.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the candidate should have specialised knowledge and experience in the chosen area of animal biosciences, should have formulated a hypothesis based on this knowledge and be able to present this material in the form or a research grant proposal such as might be submitted to a major funding organisation or industrial partner.

The candidate should:
o be familiar with an advanced area of animal biosciences;
o be able to make a logical, rational and well-argued hypothesis;
o have developed a feasible research programme to test this hypothesis;
o have justified the research programme;
o have taken into account the ethical issues and paid attention to the principles of reduction, replacement, and refinement in animal research.
