It enables students to analyse theoretical treatments of early states measured against inferences from text-rich archaeolgical sources. Regions and themes covered include the pristine states of Mesopotomia and the secondary states of Syro-Anatolia. The course will focus on such issues as agency and power relations, heterogeneity amongst complex societies, urbanism and exchange. |
