Aims of course
1 to provide a practical and theoretical knowledge of horticulture.
2 to communicate knowledge about the use of plant material in design, growth characteristics, environmental requirements and aesthetic qualities.
3 to develop plant recognition skills and the ability to explore the qualities of plants as a design medium.

Additional Information (Assessment) Students must pass all learning outcomes. The aggregation of failed Learning outcomes with passing learning outcomes to generate an overall pass mark is not permitted. Failure of one learning outcome will result in a Forced Fail (FF) outcome. Learning Outcome 1 - Tree/Shrub Planting Proposal (in conjunction with Semester 2 Park Design Project). Learning Outcome 2 Lawn and Meadow Assignment. Learning Outcome 3 Plant Identification Assignment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. be able to demonstrate an understanding of the value of trees and shrubs in the designed landscape and how they are produced, cultivated and managemented.
  2. be able to demonstrate an understanding of the design, construction, management and maintenance of types of planting for amenity areas including traditional lawns, wildflower meadows and prairie planting.
  3. be able to recognise 50 plant species and explore their qualities and characteristics for use as design material.
