SummaryThe course provides the framework of supervision for a substantial, independent research and writing project. The course requires the student to execute and write-up an agreed original research topic in the area of cultural and visual studies. The course allows students to activate research design, planning and methods skills acquired in course-delivered research training elements of the programme. At least one qualified academic member of staff is dedicated to supervising the student in this process. Additional academic and other experts may be drawn upon as advisers to support the student¿s research.
Course description To enable students do the following:
1. Independently acquire a detailed knowledge in the chosen subject demonstrating sufficient understanding of relevant cultural, historical and philosophical themes;
2. Ability to construct an complex intellectual argument expressed against stated objectives and presenting original conclusion;
3. Ability to produce a substantial piece of academic writing, well-written and well-illustrated, using correct citation conventions and acknowledgement of sources.

Additional Information (Assessment) The dissertation will be approximately 20,000 words in length excluding footnotes and bibliography. Students will receive regular supervision and will be expected to submit at least one detailed plan to the supervisor and regularly present work in progress.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Successful development and execution of independent research project
  2. Writing up of research findings.
  3. Experience in applying theoretical, methodological and technical knowledge acquired in other parts of the programme.
