SummaryThis course offers an examination of Scandinavian architecture and design between c.1890-1960. Focusing on selected developments in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, it also highlights the significant relationship to German theory and practice of the period. Beginning with a consideration of the legacy of National Romanticism, the course moves on to explore architectural Expressionism, Nordic Classicism, and Scandinavia┐s unique form of architectural modernism known as ┐Functionalism┐ or the ┐Scandinavian synthesis┐. Architects studied include Martin Nyrop, Eliel Saarinen, Kay Fisker, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen. Examination of individual buildings and civic planning is combined with a focus on the close relationship between architecture and integrated design that remains such a strong feature of the Nordic countries to this day.
