SummaryIndicative course content
In this module, students will have the opportunity to apply previously acquired skills in visual, critical and contextual analysis to the study of an individual artist or group of artists. Emphasis will be placed on encouraging students to reach original and thoughtful conclusions about individual artists, selected from a range of possibilities covered by the module. Students will be able to show discrimination in their choice of artist(s) or maker(s).

Aims of course
1 To facilitate a focus on individual designers or makers to enable students to gain a developed understanding of individual creative process within a particular cultural and social context
2 To enable students to draw comparisons across a range of cultural processes to arrive at a sophisticated understanding of individually determined and inscribed meaning within the contemporary context.
3 To give students confidence in selecting for discussion and study individual artists or artist groups that have a particular relevance to their own studio practice

Mode of delivery
Gallery based study day consisting of lecture, discussion, visit and supporting materials.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Show clearly how individual creativity functions within a cultural context
  2. Demonstrate a confident and commanding understanding of individual creative practice
  3. Demonstrate confidence and fluency in the verbal and written critical discussion of works using appropriate critical vocabularies that show evidence of close reading of texts and confidence in using references and quotations to amplify the arguments
